A7C-JNQCalcite CaCO3
Minya Governorate, EgyptDimensions: 150 mm x 150 mm x 8 mm
Calcite with manganese oxide dendrites and may be manganoan calcite.
The quarries at Hatnub, just east of Minya, Nile Valley, Egypt have long produced dendritic calcite of this kind, with distinctive orange banding. Whether dendritic or not this stone is also known as calcite-alabaster and has been much prized for millennia. For a piece almost identical to this one look Gabriele Borghini (and others), Marmi Antichi, De Luca Editori d'Arte, 2021, p.140. There is still active quarrying at Minya today.
