Oxford Mineral Show, May 2008

Last Updated: 19th May 2008

By Jolyon & Katya Ralph

A mini-report on the Oxford Mineral Show.

Here is Mike Brook from Broadstone Minerals at his table:

Mike Brooke, Broadstone Minerals

Amongst the nice pieces Mike had to offer was this very pretty Pyrolusite from Morocco. Not a rare mineral by a long shot, but this specimen was nice.

Moving along, I met again with Simon Hildred who had another Moroccan specimen of note - this time a very pretty Acanthite specimen, for once with decent lustre AND a core of deep red Proustite!

... and the Proustite core

Greenside minerals had this nice (well, I think it's nice, but many of you might think it's ugly) Cerussite from the Pentire Glaze mine in Cornwall:

Geopolis, who came all the way to Oxford from France, had a great selection of minerals, but my favourite (and the cheapest!) were their Marcasite groups from Cap Blanc-Nez, near Calais. I bought a couple of them:

Finally, Peter Briscoe ( was selling a selection of the new find of Cornish Aragonite from Port Quin, which was described recently in the UK Journal of Mines and Minerals. Some specimens also contain Todorokite.

A smaller, but beautiful group of Aragonite crystals

This 6cm specimen of Aragonite came home with me!

That's all from Oxford for this time. The next Oxford Show is on Sunday July 6th this year - I won't be at that one, but I'll try to report back from the next Oxford Show after that.

I thought the pyrolusite was spectacular! Thanks Jolyon, always a treat to see your show reports. Gail
