4M Swap Fair - 2017 Live Report

Last Updated: 5th Nov 2017

By Tom Costes

This is a LIVE report, keep this page loaded for live updates - new images will appear as they are added.

Each year on the first weekend of November there is the biggest swap fair of the BeNeLux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg) in Montigny-le-Tilleul. There are about 170 meters of tables, all and only for swapping!

A quick shot from ground level

Mind you... Everything is very relaxed and most people are still setting up

Some nice epidotes and garnets from Mali

An some people are very late

Rare Belgian minerals from Michel Blondieau

Official opening of the fair and some announcements. From left to right: Rene Vandenbosch, Michel Croisez and Francis Hubert

The reception is working at full speed

A lot of Lengenbach with Bart De Weerd

I just noticed Jolyon's live report from London.... Let's get ready to rumble!

The stand of Francis Van Troyen with a lot of gret self collected Belgian pieces

A big calcite from the Leffe quarry, Namur, Belgium. The label is about 10cm.

A fine Baryte from Irhoud Mine

Wim Wijshoff has a lot of micromounts, especially from slags

Sometimes there are more important things than minerals.

Every year there is a competition for the best micromount and this year the minerals has to be Wulfenite. So they have set up an exposition with mutiple photos from said mineral

Nice balanced exchange done. My 2 pieces on the left against 3 pieces on the right. All labels included; Ottrelite from the TL: Ottre, at the bottom right.

Some people need a bit more time to negociate.

Live report.... of the live report... Anything goes here in Belgium.

Some other Wulfenites

And an exposition on Belgian Fluorites

Fluorite from Seilles Belgium

Plenty fossils to exchange as well !

The light isn't ideal for taking photos, but trust me that this is a really nice piece from Matagne-la-Grande

A French one from Foisches

And even some Spanish ones

Lovely paintings from our world by local artist Annie Raps.

From left to right, 3rd 2nd & 1st price Wulfinite micromount: Alain Legrand, Jean Leconte, Louis Verschuren! Thanks to the jury, Michel Blondieaux and Francis Hubert!

This report was lacking Aquamarine... So here is a box with Aquamarine crystals from Namibia

Interesting presentation on the origin of minerals by Philippe Thiran - an expert in the sands of our world. An obvious topic, but the answer is a bit more complex than we all might think

The 4M has asked me to post the details of the organiser at the end of te report so people can contact him if they want to join us next year.

Spock out!

Thanks for the report Tom. There seems to be lots of nice material for trades. On the slide with the fossils, I noticed in the blue plastic tray some samples of the rare fossil "beer bottle capsia" :-)!

Yes you are correct, that is a common and very good fossil in Belgium

Beautiful trade fair organized by the 4M. I have been involved for almost 15 years and each year, I exchange more than 100 minerals and fossils in a nice atmosphere. What is important is that we not only exchange minerals and fossils, but also information about quarries, excavations ... with the utmost respect for everyone ... we try to speak the language of the person we meet: we try French, English, German, Dutch, but also Italian and Spanish. thank you to 4M members for this organization!
