Tucson 2013 - Don't miss these events

Last Updated: 28th Jan 2013

By Jolyon & Katya Ralph

The Tucson Shows are just about to start - so now is a great time to put some dates in your diaries for some very important events that are happening during showtime.

Wednesday 6th February - 6.30pm - presentations night at the Pueblo Show

Last year's presentation

For the second year running, the Pueblo Gem and Mineral Show, at the Riverpark Inn Hotel (350 South Freeway), will be hosting an evening of presentations along with drinks and light refreshments. There will be seats for those who arrive early enough, and standing room for those who don't. This year our ambitious program includes:

A presentation on the upcoming Changsha mineral show in China
Tomasz Prazkier - "Mibladen - The most famous Moroccan locality"
John Veevaert - "Mineral Fakes - what to look for and what to do when you find one"
Mark Mauthner - "A short report from the 2nd International Conference in Morocco"

Entry is free, and parking (either self parking or valet parking) is free for this evening's event also. Light refreshments provided. Mineral dealers at the Pueblo Gem show will also be opening late this evening so you can combine an informative evening with a bit of shopping if you wish!

Sunday 10th February - 6.00pm - What's Diggin? at Westward Look Resort

A free presentation about recent activity at the Adelaide, Rogerley and Oceanview mines by good friends of - Adam Wright, Cal Graeber and Jeff Swanger.
Social hour starts at 6.00pm, presentation at 7.30pm, in the Gold Dining Room at the Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina Rd.

Monday 11th February - 5.00pm - 'OLD FARTS' gathering

UK Mining Ventures are celebrating their 15th year at the Rogerley Mine, with their annual 'OLD FARTS' gathering (Original Locality Data, Fluorite, Ale and Related Trivia Subcommittee) in and around room 144 at the Tucson City Center Hotel, 475 N. Granada, on Monday Feb 11 from 5 pm – 8 pm. English style ale (brewed by Jesse Fisher), English cheeses and other nibbles.

Wednesday 13th February - Members Meeting

The Members Meeting in 2011

Every year at Tucson, Rock Currier generously hosts us for an evening in the Jewel Tunnel Ballroom at the Hotel Tucson City Center (formally known as Inn Suites) show on 475 N. Granada.

No set agenda, a chance for managers to meet anyone who is interested in attending. We will discuss things that are happening with, listen to your feedback, comments and suggestions, and maybe talk about some of the new features yet to come.

This year it will be held at 6.30pm, and goes on as long as everyone wants it to, often spilling into further private chats in the bar next door afterwards. Snacks provided. Free of charge.

Thursday 14th February - Sunday 17th February - at the TGMS show

View into the main hall at TGMS will again have a booth at the TGMS show, in the Tucson Convention Center, where we will be meeting people, talking about rocks, and hopefully trying to rest a little bit after our manic Tucson adventures. Come say hi. Free mineral identifications! For a $5.00 fee we'll examine your meteorite and tell you that it's not a meteorite at all!

Thanks for the heads up, Jolyon. I appreciate being able to preplan my calendar, and every input is
helpful....I would think that the opening to the public of the new China Minerals exhibit at the U of A
Museum would be another helpful date to enter once we can find out when that information is available

Ray - there are various events that are invite-only, so these are not included, I think the UofA launch is one of these.

Jolyon, thanks for the promo for the OLD FARTS meeting. If we run out of beer this year, I'll blame it on you. Also worth noting are the lecture series at the TGMS/convention center show. On Friday Feb. 15 I will be rambling on about English fluorite and the Rogerley Mine for the TGMS and on Saturday much the same for the FM, along with other luminaries including Peter Lyckberg, Mark Jacobson, Arivd Pasto and John Rakovan. Come to the lectures - we all need a break from spending money once in a while, and it helps our egos to see your smiling faces in the audience!

You shouldn't run out of beer since I won't be there!!

Since I don't have a car, I'll try to join some mercyful soul who wants to take me with him/her to the Pueblo Show :) My first time in Tucson MUST BE adventurous ;)

Thanks for the list, Jesse will look forward to meeting you in Tucson. Your fluorites arrived just fine, very nice stuff. What kind of beer do you brew?
