Pocket Mindat Catalogue - Now Available

Last Updated: 16th Aug 2011

Pocket Mindat Catalogue now available for smartphones

If you have been using the Mindat.org Catalogue system for your collection (and if not then click on 'My Home Page' and then 'My catalogue') and you have a smart phone or other internet-enabled pocket device (such as an iPhone, Android Phone or iPod Touch) - you can now view your collection catalogue wherever you are (as long as you have net access, although it will work over 3G or other mobile data connections).

To access the catalogue you need to visit the following URL on your phone or pocket device:

Once it's loaded, you will see this screen:

Now's a good time to add this to your bookmarks or favourites. The '+' button on an iPhone or iPod Touch will allow you to either add it to your favourites or add to the Home Screen - which is the best way to store it.

Now. Log in with your normal mindat.org email address and password. You'll get the main menu.

Click on the 'My Species List' option and you'll get an alphabetical list of all species in your collection. Very useful for systematic collectors who want to make sure they don't already own a rare species before buying it. Clicking on a name will list all the minerals in your collection with that species.

Now, return to the main menu and choose the search option.

You can search by mineral name, locality or catalogue ID number.

The result of a search looks like this. You can see a thumbnail photo of a specimen if you've associated a photo with it, itherwise it shows the mineral name(s) and locality.

Clicking on an entry gives the full details page:

Have fun and enjoy!

If you like this and find it useful, then please donate so that I can continue to develop and expand the system for you.

It would be possible to build an off-line app version for the iPhone and/or Android systems that would give you the ability to store your catalogue and browse it even if you're not online - if I raise enough donations and sponsorship I'll start developing it!

Is it just for smartphones or is it printable as well? It should be interesting even for my collection too!!!

Great! Now i have a lot more work to do, adding some thousand minerals into my mindat catalogue... Tested with the few I've already added, and it works fine :)

Jolyon

thanks, this is great, and works wellon my HTC Android, just what I wanted

one note of concern - varities such as "aquamarine" don't appear on the list either as "aquamarine" nor as "beryl", easy enough to work-around though when making entries

Rather than rely on sponsorship to fund the stand-alone version, why not make it an app you buy for a couple of bucks?

Well, it costs me $99 a year to register for the App Store, so I'd have to sell 50 a year to break even at that price. Would probably need to be nearer to $20 to make it viable. Because if I did it as an app, I'd want to make it good.
