DENVER SHOW 2017 - Everything you need to know!

Last Updated: 17th Aug 2017

By Jolyon & Katya Ralph

MINDAT.ORG IS COMING TO DENVER THIS SEPTEMBER!

We're excited to see old friends and make new ones - we all know one of the best parts of mineral shows is being in a crowd of like-minded mineral-enthusiasts!

THE FACES OF MINDAT IN DENVER

There will be a lot going on - same as any show - but you're sure to see us around. Here are the faces of mindat that you'll be seeing in Denver with some (mostly silly) information as well as tips on how to best earn points with them (we aren't entirely sure what the game is or how it's scored, but hey).

We've got some big things happening in Denver this year, so here’s some of what we've got planned!

THE RETURN OF THE SILENT AUCTION

A crowd favourite at the Denver Gem & Mineral Show (Denver Mart) is returning - the silent auction! The auction will be held in conjunction with the show’s Saturday Night Event which will also feature a dinner (a $1 pre-paid ticket is required for dinner, but not needed to attend the event), presentation of the show awards, and a live performance by the Borscht Brothers (which definitely should not be missed!). Similar to the silent auction we run at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, ALL of the auction proceeds will benefit mindat.org, which means it is a great way for you to support us while snagging a few great items too!

For this to work, we need your help with two things:

WE NEED YOUR DONATIONS!

The mindat.org silent auctions were born from the recognition that many of us in the world of geoscience are cash-poor, but rock-rich. We ask for donations of items that then go into the auction in order to raise money to continue our efforts to promote education, awareness, and appreciation of the multi-faceted realms of geology. We appreciate each and every donation we receive, and all of our donors are listed on the mindat.org home page in recognition of their generosity.

If you're going to be at any of the Denver Show venues and you have something you'd like to donate (whether it's a single rock, a flat, a book, or anything else!), first, THANK YOU! Second, there are two ways to go about it:

1. Drop off the donation at one of our donation stations:
We will have a list of donation station locations (say that five times fast) shortly.

2. Arrange for us to pick up your donation.
If you need us to pick up a donation, please get in touch with Erin by e-mailing erin@mindat.org - she’ll need to know where you’ll be, when to come by, and if any special arrangements need to be made to transport your donation.

Alternatively, come and find me (Jolyon). You can find me somewhere in the following schedule:
- Tuesday and Wednesday (September 12th & 13th) at the new Denver Mineral Show in the National Western Complex (more about that below).
- Friday (September 15th) at the Original Denver Gem and Mineral Show at Denver Mart.

COME TO THE SILENT AUCTION AND BID!

The Saturday Evening Event is open to everyone! If you’ve ever been to a mineral auction, you know the kind of lucrative deals that can be had - and if you’ve never been to one, this is great excuse to try it out! (Trust us - it's really fun!)

NEW PRODUCTS

We have several new products available for all your mineral needs. Stop by the booth at the Denver Gem & Mineral Show (Denver Mart, September 15-17) and talk to Nathan to snag yours!

NEW SHIRTS WILL BE AVAILABLE!

These editions will have a very limited print run and only available AT THE SHOW - sorry, no mail-order! We'll be selling more shirts in the future by mail order, but for now the only way to get these is to pick one up at the show (or get someone to pick one up for you).

I'm Addicted to Crystal Math - for everyone who is proud of their crystallography addiction (just be careful about visiting dyslexic relatives). Perfect for mineralogists, crystal enthusiasts, chemical engineers, or anyone who just enjoys a slightly off-color but delightfully nerdy joke.

Mindat.org logo - by popular demand, a simple mindat.org logo tee. If you find yourself referencing mindat.org daily, this is a great way to save yourself some time in conversation - just point to your chest!

Welcome to Tsumeb - since bringing the Welcome to Tsumeb design to Tucson this year, we've had many asking whether there will be more - here they are! While the original shirt was a limited edition on 'dioptase' (ish) green, this run will be on 'cerussite' tan, which should make it perfect for digging in any of the various 'tan' dirts. Of course, it's fine for just wearing around town also. The design features the headframe of the De Wet shaft and is the perfect way to show your passion for Tsumeb.

INTRODUCING THE PORTABLE MICROSCOPE!

For use at home or in the field, the battery-powered microscope allows you to study tiny things anywhere! Easy to take in the field or to the show (of course it also works at home!). Features regular lighting as well as UV!

AND MORE!

We can't let all our secrets out just yet (that would ruin all the fun), but be sure to stop by the mindat.org booth (Denver Mart!) to see what else we've been working on!

OTHER THINGS WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IN DENVER

Outside all the fun things we just told you about, we'll also be checking out shows across the city and running a live report so you can join us for the adventure! We're keeping tabs on what's new and exciting for this year, so here's our current to-see list.

The Denver Mineral Show in the National Western Complex

A brand new event in a new venue, plenty of parking and within walking distance from the massive Coliseum show. Free entry and all your favourite mineral dealers, so do come along. I will be there most of the time on Tuesday and Wednesday (September 12 & 13) if you wish to meet up. Look out for me and the Denver Show Live Report which will be starting there!

Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum Open House

A classic event of the fall Denver shows is the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum Open House. The CSM Geology Museum hosts a fantastic collection of Colorado minerals as well as international localities (you may have seen some of it in Erin's Live Report on the recent Gold & Silver Deposits of Colorado Symposium) and the Open House is a great social event during which to peruse the museum. The Open House is Wednesday, September 13th, from 4PM to 9PM. (There is a cash bar.) The museum is located at 1301 Maple St, Golden, CO 80401.

For more information about the Colorado School of Mines Museum, click here. You can also follow the museum on Facebook through the pages for the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum OR the Friends of the Colorado School of Mines Geology Museum.

I personally find the shirt in extremely poor taste. Ohio has a major problem right now with heroin and drug prescription opiates, which kills an average 23 Ohioans a day. (This is from a CBS News report).

You can't please everyone.

I think the design is harmless, certainly when compared to the dramatism of this issue in TV shows such as 'Breaking Bad' (check out the merchandise available for that!)

It was my idea, and I stand by it. It's not for everyone, but the feedback we have had so far, other than yours, has been enormously positive.

We could have just redone the old geology/mineralogy jokes, but how many 'cummingtonite' or 'schist' jokes can you actually get away with these days?

ps. The crystal face equations on the shirts are all genuine :)

I find it in poor taste, funny, and will probably buy one at the show.

Cheers,

The Portable Microscope looks great! I assume these are also available only at the Denver show for now...when might they be available from the Mindat Shop? (By the way, the current link at the top bar directs to https://www.mindat.org/https//store.mindat.org...)

Cheers
