“A small piece of light blue precious opal with red, green and yellow play-of-color from the Starfire Opal Mine deposit. This material comes out of the ground a darker blue, and lightens to pale blue and almost white upon drying. This specimen measures 1.75 inches across the polished face. Some cracking/crazing is noted but it is not as bad as from other deposits in Nevada. The mine was operated as a fee dig site in the 1970's and early 1980's by the Lambrights, who owned the property at that time. The opal is associated with Chalcedony and plain white agate, the blue precious opal normally occurring on the outer edges of the chalcedony. The play-of-color is highly directional (not visible from all angles) and changes/disappears/reappears abruptly. Hard to photograph as there is better color in the piece than shown in the photo. Small gems can be cut from this material.”
