While this locality is justly famous for its world class specimens of rutile, as well as excellent lazulite and "turgite", ilmenite is not often seen. According to Johnston, W.E. (1935) Kyanite at Graves Mountain, GA, a Georgia Geological Survey bulletin, several specimens of large tabular ilmenite crystals were found on the north side of the mountain in float, but none observed in place. This must be one of those large crystals. Crude, but with decent crystal definition, the specimen is solid ilmenite and measures 10.2 x 6.4 x 1.8 cm in size. Very neat locality piece!
