A finely laminated bituminous-coal with bright to semi-bright bands. Overall it has a silky lustre, often containing fine vitrain bands alternating with a duller attrital groundmass. It has a sheetlike, irregular fracture. It is distinguished from vitrain by containing fine intercalations of a duller lithotype, durain. Its characteristic microlithotype is clarite.
