Sep 2023Re: Hagendorf - is this laueite or ?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Photos.
I am familiar with Hagendorf and was one of the last collectors who found nice phopsphates on the dump. There was even a sign that we were allowed to take all that we want: more than collector-friendly!  Back to the photo: For sure no Laueite. I think this might be a nice and very typical ...
May 2023Re: POTD 30 maggio 2023Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Messaggeria in lingua italiana.
I'm always happy to see interesting pictures of unusual minerals. Therefore this photo is also very important for me and rightly so for POTD.Of course, you almost always show almost perfect shots that really deserve the highest respect. From a human point of view, however, I have to refuse you this ...
Apr 2022Re: Old gold specimens from "Füzeso, Siebenbürgen"Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
Fizeș, Băița, Hunedoara, Romania (mindat.org)  This is the actual name for Füzesd, mentioned in several old reports for gold mining in Transsylvania. Hope this helped.
Oct 2021Re: Bohemia (Böhmen; Boehmen), Czech RepublicReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Localities.
I added the sublocality "Lužecký  potok" for you with the Zepharovich reference. Will inform you when it is accepted by the moderators and works.
Oct 2021Re: Bohemia (Böhmen; Boehmen), Czech RepublicReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Localities.
Thank you for showing it! A really nice specimen. Yes - to me it looks like some of my own finds from this district. https://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?cform_is_valid=1&loc=106534&min=210&photoclass=1&showtype=1&orderxby=&cf_pager_page=1Mindat does not list any Analcime ...
Oct 2021Re: Bohemia (Böhmen; Boehmen), Czech RepublicReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Localities.
Interesting. Now i doubt that the label is correct written. Not easy to track it but i think i have found a possible solution. I own a copy of Victor Ritter von Zepharovich: Mineralogisches Lexicon für das Kaiserthum Österreich. He mentions Analcime from "Thal bei Luschwitz" in Ústí nad ...
Aug 2021Re: Wölsendorf?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Photos.
I would say very typical from Rieding lake on Weißeck mtn. area. For sure not a Krimml find. I also would say Wölsendorf is unlikly too.
Jun 2021Re: Pyrite in ancient EgyptReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Education.
In ancient Egypt, pyrite was known for its strength and special properties. The Egyptians used this mineral as an ornament in the clothing of priests, it was often used as part of necklaces and other items such as mirrors. According to popular belief, pyrite also has a healing and protective ...
Apr 2021Re: Just for fun: classical compositions about geological featuresReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
I love the songs of my personal friend David K. Joyce: "Nuggets and High Grade! The Mineral Collecting and Mining Songs of David K. Joyce"There is even a song about crystal systems! !Weusd a Herz hast wia a Bergwerk" (because you have a heart like a mine) from Rainhard Fendrich is still ...

Can someone please explain the esoteric effects of Photoshopite? I guess it's like an optical hallucinogen?

Mar 2020Re: German tongxinite locality in MinDat?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
Brumbach Creek belongs to the Sangerhausen mining district: if i am correctly informed this is a product from the smelters. I must say even for this it is rare and nice
Aug 2018Re: Earliest known collecting of a mineral specimenReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
A couple of years ago i visited the archeological site on "Magdalensberg" in Carinthia, Austria. Roman age - first century bc to the middle of the first century ac. Seems this was a commercial center. The source of the high quality "Noric Iron" was not far away: Hüttenberg mining district. ...
Mar 2018Re: Sphalerite - Styrian Erzberg, Eisenerz, Styria, AustriaReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Photos.
I know this find and i think i also know the finder: my schoolmate Franz G. . From him i obtained some of the very rare samples. It is very possible that this questionable micromount was in my collection. Indeed they are typical Spalerites! In damaged crystals i can also see the good cleavage. ...
Nov 2017Re: The Mindat Museum DirectoryReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Minerals and Museums.
How can i do it?
Nov 2017Re: The Mindat Museum DirectoryReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Minerals and Museums.
https://www.mindat.org/museum-36.html Is still open. But all minerals are in a deposit now (not open to public). Actually the Museum shows a number of nice fossil finds fom Upper Austria and some other geological samples.
Nov 2017Re: The Mindat Museum DirectoryReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Minerals and Museums.
https://www.mindat.org/museum-35.html Is open but not easy to visit. They have even two different collections: The well known "Mineralogisches Kabinett" with historic specimen from the Austro-Hungarian times and the more modern "Wallenta collection" with minerals only from Upper Austria.Usually ...
Sep 2017Re: Is Fuscite really a synonym for Scapolite?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
I own an original copy of "Mineralogische Tabellen" (Hugo Strunz, Leipzig 1978). This very respected work does mention a whole lot of long forgotten synonyms - including "Fuscite" as an old name for Scapolite. Usually this book is extemly accurate and trustworthy. I hope this helps a little bit.
May 2017Re: Canfieldite from Himmelsfürst Mine, Freiberg?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Improving Mindat.org.
This is my specimen. Sorry - i can not analyze it myself. Few years ago i aquired it from Christian Rewitzer. His label (saying Canfieldite on Silver) is still on his original box. Normally i know him as a trusted dealer/collector.
Jan 2017Re: REAL Turquoise? please helpReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
Rolf, The verification in Linz University was more than exact!!!!! Actually they are working on a gemstone database. The goal is to provide datas for worldwide use as a reference database where you can see where your stone comes from. This means they are not only looking for the exact species. ...
Jan 2017Re: REAL Turquoise? please helpReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
We all (gemologists included!) have not any chance to confirm if a Turquoise is 100 % natural, treated or even faked. Only some of the worst fakes can be found........ A few days ago i was in Linz University/Austria. Actually they prepare a study about it. For this study a lot of samples was ...
Nov 2016Re: Oldest mineral specimens?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
These quartz crystals were found in Roman excavations at the Magdalensberg in Kärtnen, Austria. The settlement existed from about 170 bc to about 50 ac. The place was a trading center. Mining was important: there was a smelter for noric iron from Hüttenberg and a smelter for gold from the ...

Aug 2016Re: Please help with Silver localityReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
Thank you all! Now i think the problem is solved. Top silver collector Terry Wallace suggested Wolverine mine or Quincy mine in Michigan. I also think this is a very good guess.
Aug 2016Please help with Silver localityPosted by Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
During a small local mineral show in Austria i aquired a well crystallized Silver TN out from an old collection. Size is 28 mm. Analyses from Joanneum museum / Graz, Austria showed that the Silver should be natural and not manmade. Unfortunately no locality was given. I think the crystals are ...

Hello Rob, since yesterday the photos are in my personal gallery. Information says "pending approval". As a normal member it is not possible to upload them directly of course.
Jun 2016Re: Magnetite pseudomorph Hematite from SeriphosReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
Rob: Of course i uploaded two photos to Avissalos locality page. Alfredo: The only result from XRD was Magnetite - no other mineral. I also informed some greek collectors via Facebook. Seems all our specimen are magnetic. So i would suggest to remove "Hematite" from the locality page Of ...

Dec 2015Re: It's not your kiddy collection any more!Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in General.
I visited Linz Show in Austria one week ago. They had a kiddy table too. Full with good Wulfenites from Mezica, Slovenia! From miniature to small cabinet size. For 2015 not a bad start for a kiddy collection i suppose........ And i remember me as a young collector. With little money i tried ...

Mar 2015Re: Do you remember your first rock show?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter to an article.
In November 1977 i found an article in our newspaper promoting a mineral show 40 km from home. On a very cold day i took my 50 ccm motor cycle. The icy ride lasted one long hour..... Inside a nice countryside restaurant i discoverd an new world. Aged 17 i was very welcome by the local mineral club ...
Feb 2015Gold peudomorphs?Posted by Gerhard Brandstetter in Education.
Gold - 20 mm Musariu mine, Brad, Transsylvania, Romania I am not sure - but i think this crude crystals are pseudomorphs after an unknown Gold mineral. For its size it is extremly light weighted! Under the microscope it seems clear that something was solved away...... A couple of tellurides ...
Jan 2015Re: Old tellurium label Transylvania?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
Some years ago i had nice trips to Romania. Faţa Băii (Facebánya; Facebay; Fatiabaja) is very close to the village of Zlatna (Zalatna; Zalathna; Schlatten; Goldenmarkt). Gold an native Tellurium was mined only in the upper parts of the old mines. I have been in the lower levels - mined for ...

Apr 2014330 imagesRe: Best photographs of specimens larger than 1cmReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Mineral Photography.
In this nice thread only photo quality counts for me - not how rare a mineral is i or how huge the crystals are.... Indeed most of the images here have a very high level. Pure fun to watch them! I have tons of mineral photos...... hard to say what are my personal favourites. I think this new ...

Feb 201417 imagesRe: Micromount storageReply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Techniques for Collectors.
I would say it depends on the size of the collection. My storage is self made - so it fits in every place in any size. And behind a big box it is also protected from dust and light. Perfect to handle a large collection and easy to produce it. And yes - cheap too.
Feb 2014Re: Calcite or Fluorite?Reply from Gerhard Brandstetter in Identity Help.
The result can only be Fluorite! I have several samples from this find, all from Mr. Metzger. Crystal form is a rhomboedron combined with small cubes. On close inspection very different from Calcite.....
