Identity HelpGraves Mountain Rutile Irridescence

22nd Jul 2007 20:28 UTCJonathan Woolley

I recently acquired a rutile specimen from Graves Mountain, Georgia, USA. It has an irridescent yellowish green coating over much of the termination. Anyone familiar with the area have any ideas what is causing this?

Here's another good view of the specimen in question.

Hi Jonathan,

This is a coating of goethite that causes the color. Most pieces from Graves show this!

Enjoy!

Thanks, Everett! I figured someone would know, and I appreciate your help.

Cheers,

Jonathan,

I believe they call it turgite as a var. because it is so hard to tell between goethite & hematite see http://www.mindat.org/min-11396.html

enjoy! Nice piece by the way!!!!

This forum remined me of something. I have a rutile specimen I obtained many years ago, when I was a child, that has an attractive iridescence, but it is neither coated by anything like turgite, nor from Graves Mountain. It is a nice sharp crystal partially embedded in pyrophyllite from the Champion Mine, near Laws, California. I wonder if anyone else has seen iridescent rutile crystals from the Champion mine.
