Minerals and MuseumsGeological Museum Copenhagen close

19th Feb 2016 09:50 UTCHans Kloster

Geological Museum in. Copenhagen has sacked the staff and provisional it close. The collection of 65.000 minerals and gems was founded in 1772. The barbarous decision is not yet published, but the staff is sacked and many exhibitions are removed to a distant store ore destroyed. We are very concerned about Islamic State and I am shocked at the similar barbarous treatment in my country.

Shocking news!

Most disappointing and tragic for the former employees - to say nothing of the presumptive loss of records and important scientific data.

In sorrow

Terrible! Is there anything we can do?

19th Feb 2016 19:50 UTCHenrik Friis

As Hans outlined, the situation is not good. The University of Copenhagen have had saving cuts (like six years ago) this time 255 chose voluntarily retirements or similar agreements. However, 209 employees were made redundant. This has also had large effect on the museum. However, as noting is official yet, we do not know what kind of thought the board of the museum have planned for the near future to secure the collections. When I learn more, I'll post here.

@Hans: Sad News, but

"We are very concerned about Islamic State and I am shocked at the similar barbarous treatment in my country."

What has this ( internationally funded) mercenary army to do with the closing of the museum ?

Marcus,

This is the desperate voice of a Danish collector who experience the destruction of not only an important museum collection, but also the destruction of the staff scientific or not, both important for the already small and fragile community of Danish collectors. This is pretty close to the death sentence for Danish mineralogy...

Comparing it to IS might be out of proportions, but it's a desperate call to tell that ignorance and stupidity is not held as a monopoly by religious fanatics, but are even growing strong in what are thought to be "civilized" countries...

Read this Copenhagen Geological museum article by Keith Compton, and be sure to hurry up visiting the museum before it's too late...

Ah, Hans, the news are so sad... I was hoping to visit the museum some day, as Finland isn't that far from Dernmark.

Is isn't that long that a very historic museum, the Mineraalikabinetti, in a architectural gem of a building, was closed in Helsinki, Finland. The premises were needed for some bureacrats, apparently. Many very old, fine samples were boxed up & are now waiting up for a future, and a lot of great samples were chucked out, I believe. No idea what has happened to the historial, beautiful wooden display cabinets themselves.

And now that the Helsinki university complex is facing massive layoffs and cost cuts of nearly 100 million euros, things are lookings grim for the educational future of Finland, and other cities here as well. As some have heard, the Geological Survey of Finland went through their history's first and massive layoffs just last year.

Such short-sighted and impatient times we are living in, yet the negative impacts of previous cuts in education should have given warnings about what social, economic, reputation, and other problems such "false politics" will lead too. Well, hmm...what can one do...

Cheers,

Henrik,

It is just a guess on my part, but does the Natural History Museum of Denmark contain the largest collection of Greenlandic minerals in the world?

I know the Øresund Cryolite Company collection from Ivigtut ended up there.

Henrik, Peter, others,

this sounds absolutely horrible. What is going on here, how can one motivate shutting down one of the classic geological museums of northern Europe. I am stunned by these news.

Dear all,

Earlier this week I was in contact with the museum and they could not comment on anything as they said details about the future of employees was not confirmed. From having spoken with some employees it does seem that the geological collections have lost a significant amount of researchers through movement to the Geological Institute or redundancy. Based on this knowledge, I cannot deny I am anxious to see the outcome when details are available. I am also rather perplexed by the statement at museum's homepage today: "In connection with the savings, the museum management has emphasized preserving the core activities. Therefore, the ambitions concerning the new museum of natural history at the Botanical garden are upheld".

I guess when they write on their homepage that they are reducing opening hours, but maintain core activities, then one conclusion could be that showing the collections (which will remain on display) is not a core activity. If so, then it is even harder to comprehend, why they write they are continuing wanting to build a new museum. I am fully aware that this interpretation is a bit stretched. I think what they mean is that they wish to maintain activities that generate money, which in Europe at the moment are large externally funded research groups, i.e. Centre of Excellence. Unfortunately, in the tough competition for research money museums all over Europe (and in the US as well, I would imagine) are finding it hard to compete. Furthermore, it seems that basic funding for museums are also struggling, and decision makers have forgotten that collections are not just rock, fossils or butterflies that some odd people looks at for unknown reasons, but actually are part of the natural and cultural history of that country.

Erik - there is nothing we can do until the museum makes a clear statement and it is broadly known what the implications are for the various collections.
