Identity HelpIs Fayalite at Forsythe Iron Mine and possible locality spelling error?

26th Nov 2014 23:52 UTCJohn Oostenryk

Hello all,

Trying to track down details on a specimen from Ward's Supply.

stock # 49-1555. Fayalite w/ magnetite from Forsythe Iron Mine in Quebec, Canada.

1st) Mindat has the location spelled as Forsyth (No E at end) Numerous references use the e~ which is correct spelling? (searching with the E gets you zero within Mindat~ hence the question.)

2nd) My Prof is the doubter- he sees no fayalite under loupe.

Mindat shows no Fayalite at Forsythe. I can confirm graphite and magnetite visually in the specimen(10x Leica scope). Not sure what else I am looking at...

Does anyone have any experience with this material?

There are several articles in first 10 via Google~ they all are doing comparative analysis stuff and are referencing the same Wards stock #.

I am thinking that the mineral is there- as they are obtaining results- just that it is not discernible. Maybe our specimen is lean or lame! ;)

Thanks in advance for any knowledge input !

~JO:)

ps: I don't think a pic is useful here- this is more a technical Question and I'm away from camera right now- but can add a pic of shiny black rock with shiny black cleavages/partings if desired:)

Thought I would add that pic I was saying was possible to have...

Hello John,

I think it is a spelling error and should have been Forsyth ( assuming Sabina got it right). The deposit is in marble so I don't think temperatures would have been high enough to create fayalite. However I am no expert on this so it may be possible that there are small amounts associated with the magnetite. I think that one would have to do a thin section to determine if any fayalite is present. Most of the black cleavages look to me like hornblende which is commonly found there.

Hi John:

I have the same specimen from Ward's. Have you been able to determine what the black mineral is?

Thanks,

Bill
