Of late, I have noticed that even if I make a trivial change - such as fixing a typo - to the text of a parent image, the photo shows up in the New Photos Today gallery. This happens even if no new photo is uploaded. (Sometimes, for older photos, I do have to feed the new required scale fields.)

I hope this is not a deliberate "feature" as it will inhibit me from fixing typos (or even feeding the scale fields). It seems to me that having the photo show up as "New Today" is rather annoying overkill. Enough new photos are being posted as it is, without cluttering this gallery even more.

Good to report this.

I'am fixing some typos too and they used to be put in the Yesterday photo gallery, what is more logical.

The scale field is the pain but important from a scientific point of view.

Anyway, you can see it at the number.

Mindat is about more than 625.000 pictures so everything passing that number, is an old pic.

A database is always evolving and sometimes little errors are made.

But I think that Jolyon and crew are working hard to avoid or rectifie if an error is made.

I would say, keep on the good work by fixing typo's, no matter where they go too.

Hi Modris,

As a chronic "New Photos Today" addict, I've been aware of this present behaviour for years… and while it doesn't always add value to these pages, more often than not it has serendipitously led me to an old picture with an updated caption which showed and told me something interesting and which otherwise I might not have seen at all. (Not a few among them from yourself. :-) ) So I for one am glad it works as it does!

I certainly do not consider it a burden at all whilst browsing the page for new photos. As Paul says, anything that isn't a new submission immediately stands out via the out-of-sequence photo number.

Other viewers' mileages may differ… just my 2c.

My point was that if I have uploaded a new (and hopefully improved) photo, then it is indeed "New Today"

But if I just fixed a typo (or even filled in the scale fields for a photo whose caption already had exactly the same information), then what's new??

However, if it doesn't bother people, then I suppose Gerhard has a point.

As long as it's not used to deliberately bring attention to the same old photo over and over.

It really comes down to figuring out what are minor changes to the description filed and what can be a significant change to the photo description. For instance if you change the habit of the mineral or the indications of which section of the photo are which mineral, a general review of the photo by the membership is desirable.
