Route 11 road cuts, Salem, New London County, Connecticut, USA

These pieces from Salem interest me because they seem to have 3 generations of quartz:

Drusy layer along pocket walls

Amethyst

Drusy coating on amethyst.

What do you all think?

Hi! I just became aware of your work at this locality via the entry on Mindat. Is access permitted? I would definitely like to check out this place! It seems like it has excellent potential.

I met a state cop at the parking area, and she was just interested about exactly what we were doing there, but when we told her she seemed very interested. I assume it's fine because of this but trust me, it takes a lot of work. If you guys want to do a group trip, I know how to access the top part of the vein, where I opened up a lot of pockets last year. that is actually where this piece came from. I collected the pockets along with Mike Otto and the Kimball family. I got some epic clusters from my pocket.

I had no idea this locality was still a productive area. I'm not afraid to do some hard work for fine amethyst specimens.

I'm game for a group trip...

I'm down as well to do some group collecting. It's always awesome meeting other local collectors psyched to do some adventuring for cool specimens. Rowan, I am really impressed by what you've found there!

Rowan....great specimen....is the cut on the east side of Salem on the unfinished side of Rt 11???....if u guys are going any time soon , my son and I would like to meet up...never afraid of hard work for rocks and meeting others .....thanks John

I was wondering if I could use the photo of the Salem amethyst in an article I'm writing for Our Town Salem about the rocks and minerals in Salem.

Jackie,

I am actually the one who photographed this particular specimen (although Rowan does have a few pictures from Route 11 here on Mindat as well, including locality photos), and I would have no problem with you using it. I also have a few other, lesser specimens I could try photographing for you as well, if you wish. Just send me an email (kimball.james@comcast.net) if you need me to send you the picture.

Just became a member, and i would really like to know where these pockets are. Are they right off the highway or is there a trail? rt 11 has a ton of state troopers and i don't wanna cause trouble stopping on the highway. i've been dying to collect my own amethyst (my favorite stone). Im from south eastern ct and often collect milky quartz at lantern hill.

Hello everybody. I live in South Eastern CT and I am wondering if anyone knows of any clubs that have field trips. I am also thinking of checking out the Salem cut if the snow ever melts. I wouldn't mind meeting up with others to learn and explore.

This site is closed, and collecting is strictly prohibited. There are many clubs you can contact and join. Meriden club, New Haven club, just to name a couple.

That's strange. I've collected at this site a number of times and never had a problem. Come to think of it, I can't really think of anything "stricktly prohibited" out there. While collecting at the site, I've seen people dirt biking, rock climbing, hiking, and even performing target practice with a shotgun. Where did you hear that? Either something changed recently, or perhaps you are confusing it with another locality? Feel free to pm me if you don't want to give information here. Thanks.
