Improving Mindat.orgDioptase from La Farola Mine, surely not?
1st Dec 2012 12:17 UTCPierre Rondelez
When I uploaded my this photo today:
http://www.mindat.org/photo-500482.html
I took a look at other dioptase photos from the same locality and came across this one:
http://www.mindat.org/photo-23110.html
surely this must be a mistake,it looks nothing at all like dioptase although,in the caption, the owner mentions that Chilean dioptase is very different from the dioptase specimens we are all familiar with ........?
One look at my photo proves different so I have concerns about the true id. of this "so called" Chilean dioptase.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Pierre

This is likely a specimen of Dioptase microcrystals or "druzy" on a somewhat mammiliated looking microcrystaline quartz matrix. The color looks about right for that as well, considering some cameras really do a fairly poor job of capturing the Blue-Green of Dioptase. There has been quite a bit of discussion to that point here on mindat in the past. Here is a small image sample of a slightly similar kind of Dioptase specimen from the Morenci mine im Arizona, USA. Some of the areas on these piece are reminiscent of the La Farola piece Rob has posted.
