Improving Mindat.orgMineralogy and related books-free downloads

I have a Scribd account and have a good assortment of books on mineralogy, crystallography and related chemistry for free download. Scribd page

There are hundreds more on Internet Archive. Internet Archive This site contains millions of books and nearly all of them are free downloads in several formats. Just type in the keyword such as mineralogy or crystallography and the results pages will give you many options. I use the DJVU program since its "lighter" (takes little space on the hard drive) and the documents themselves are smaller and view faster than PDF format. The free WinDJView reader is here: DJVU reader It is available for Windows or Mac machines and also works fine in Linux.

All of these downloads are legal in the USA. Please check your own countries copyright laws.

Don't forget Dexter, these books are from the public domain. I would think your textbook is currently under copyright protection and is likely to be so for nearly three quarters of the next century. That being said, I might mention that the Geological Survey is having their monthly sale until July 16. No textbooks, but in the recent past they had several interesting mineralogical history books on sale. http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Publications/Bookshop/Sale?utm_medium=email&utm_source=MyNewsletterBuilder&utm_content=#subscriber_id#&utm_campaign=The+GSL+July+Online+Bookshop+sale+ends+on+Tuesday+15th+July+1412096723&utm_term=visit+the+sale+page+on+our+website

Hi Dexter,

The original Mineralogy book (I'm assuming you're talking about the Berry book) was published in 1959, and it seems like the copyright was not renewed, so it might be in public domain already. However, the 2nd edition from 1983 is definitely copyrighted and is not in public domain, and as such cannot be freely copied and publicly distributed.

As an alternative, you can look on e.g. Amazon and you'll see used copies for sale starting from a couple bucks excluding shipping from other sellers. I've got the 1983 Mineralogy in great condition from one of the used book sellers on Amazon for way below 20 bucks including shipping. Your university bookstore will never beat that price.

Oops, am I allowed to mention prices and sellers on the forum here...?

Best Regards,

MarekC

The changes in the copyright laws changed dramatically in the last 15 years with many grandfatherings extending copyright protection up to a total of 75 years. Be very careful to read the current law and verify that a copyright has not been extended. At the time of the Copyright Act of 1976, there was still the 28 year rule plus one renewal of 28 years if you applied for it on time. That has all changed. Most modern US copyrights are 75 years and there have been clever, if not misleading, uses of derivative copyright going back to day one of publications you thought had to be in the public domain. A study I did in reprinting a book, in the 1980s, revealed that only 11% of published books after the 1909 Copyright Act ever had their copyrights renewed. Even until 1976, most manuscript works were not in the public domain and that law granted an additional 25 years of protection. That prevented some of my writings to appear until after 2001, even though some of the documents went back to the Alien and Sedition Acts and the war with France. When doing some of that research, I asked a friend to help me review some of the manuscripts I was using for a history chapter and as she grew up in Philadelphia, she was surprised when she received the originals of the Benjamin Franklin correspondence. Fortunately, I was able to get permission to extensively cite the Benjamin Vaughan correspondence from the senior owner of the copyright.

The rule of thumb Google seems to use is that if it is published after 1924, don't copy it for free distribution, without permission.

I think the book that the mineralogy textbook "Dexter Perkins" is looking for is probably this one:

Dexter, P., 2001, Mineralogy, 2nd Edition, Prentice Hall Publishing, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. p. 483

This is the textbook that I used in my mineralogy class....there is also a new 3rd edition as well.

Why would Dexter be searching for a book he wrote, because he needs it to study for an exam?

He seems very confused, since he asked in 2012 he may have failed if he is still waiting for a free book download! :-S
