Looks like road base (tar) ;) No seriously now, I think I recall seeing a similar specimen of vesuvianite ?? others will probably know more.

Goodluck,

Craig.

Apatite?; please check the hardness.

Craig,

Vesuvianite was the first thing that pooped into my mind as well, but I was not sure being the very very dark green that it is and not quite the same cluster form that I have seen before.

Luiz,

They would know apatite. It would need to be something far less common than that, but thank you.

Did you see I had posted over at GA..."make sure and post on mindat" and then came over and saw you had. If anyone can make a good educated guess with little info it's the folks over here. It still amazes me at the amount of knowledge many of the people over here know. yYea, like you said...the miners have no idea so it's either something very unique mineral wise, something with a totally different habit that what they have seen, or something that has never been found in that area.

It looks like a pyroxene - check for cleavages.

29th Apr 2011 06:38 UTCJamey Swisher

I will have him check if he can. But pyroxene is a rather large variance, lol. I could also not find any images of it that even remotely looks like this specimen.

I did however find these:

Which aside from color, are almost identical.

Hello,

It's some kind of Clinopyroxene.

Augite would be a good fit. Hedenbergite could be, rather than diopside.

A definite ID requires analysis.

If it was vesuvianite you should see some squarish cross-sections; its hard to tell in the pics but it looks 6-sided?

29th Apr 2011 10:23 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

Clinopyroxene.

29th Apr 2011 14:15 UTCAnonymous User

I counted 6 sides on a few of them as well, Ralph

29th Apr 2011 17:25 UTCJamey Swisher

Yes there are a few six sided I saw and could count. And I see no square cross sections. I do know the locale does produce diopside, but typically in very light minty green gemmy crystals looking in color and once cut identical to Mint grossular from Merelani. So would that rule out diopside as a support outer in?

Sorry, my knowledge is with gemstones and gemstone rough when it comes to ID, as well as jasper and agate and those sorts. I cam usually pinpoint those quickly, as Jason knows, but things like this I am just learning, so it will take me a while. I am going to try and see about obtaining a floater maybe, that way I can run full gemological testing on it. Just not sure if it will be cost effective from Africa to US for something like this, lol.

So the agreement is a clinopyroxene then? Of either Augite, Hedenbergite, or diopside?

Thanks again everyone.
