Identity Helpstumped

5th Nov 2009 03:52 UTCDonald Vaughn

I think this one should be obvious but it evades me

the specimen has a hardness of about 6-6 1/2

it comes from an igneous contact zone of a marble

true size about three millimeters

from location on route 11 several miles south of Gouverneur New York

I'm currently running up against a wall on my current equipment so the pictures aren't great

5th Nov 2009 10:23 UTCHoward Heitner

Looks like the typical red-brown uvite of that area.

5th Nov 2009 14:41 UTCDonald Vaughn

is it really that widespread in St. Lawrence County? but that was the first thought I had when I found the specimen how would you explain the hardness since it does not scratch quartz? quartz does scratch it though

Hi Donald,

I think Howard is probably right. The only other thought I had was Sphalerite. It would explain your hardness issue and it can take on this color. Good luck and all the best.

My first thought was spalerite but the hardness is wrong for that. What kind of streak does it have?

5th Nov 2009 19:54 UTCerik vercammen

A member of the chondrodite-humite group?

5th Nov 2009 20:05 UTCRob Woodside 🌟 Manager

Erik's suggestion fits the hardness and colour.

5th Nov 2009 20:20 UTCRonald John Gyllenhammer Expert

Agreed.

5th Nov 2009 20:21 UTCDonald Vaughn

white streak, habit is wrong for sphalerite most of the crystals in the location lengthened along the c-axis more like a hexagonal or trigonal species the angle that I took the picture though was not a good angle I'll attempt to get better lighting on it and get it from a different angle.

I really wish I had collected more material for testing there were a lot of crystals exposed. The hardness has me confused though and unless my method is completely wrong I'm not ready to just label it Uvite.

here are some different angles in better lighting I hope

Too soft for uvite but matches chondrodite or norbergite. Does it fluoresce? If yellowish under SWUV it is probably norbergite.

5th Nov 2009 20:46 UTCDonald Vaughn

actually norbergite was my second thought, I have no S.W. light available to test fluorescence though

Oh boy!!!

5th Nov 2009 21:35 UTCSteve Hardinger 🌟 Expert

I like the norbergite idea as well.

5th Nov 2009 21:42 UTCDonald Vaughn

I guess norbergite is a good tentative ID, unless there are other objections, interjection or outright rejections.

now to trim for the Perky box thank you all for your input.
