LocalitiesDorion Amethyst Mine, Mineral Lot A, McTavish Township, Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada

How Many Amethyst Mines are there "located about 5 miles (8 km) NE of Pearl"? In 2002 and later this mine was located as such. I visited the Dorion Amethyst Mine in the late 80's and early 90's There was fluorite there then and I have the samples. Then in 2008 we got "The Old Ontario Gem Mine" http://www.mindat.org/loc-17287.html which has been merged and separated from the Dorion Mine. Photos of the Fluorite identical to ones I collected the Dorion are assigned to this mine and not the Dorion where I collected them. What's going on?

Hello Rob,

Actually there are several occurrences of amethyst in that area (8km NE of Pearl). The coordinates for Ontario Gem Mine locate it where Sabina does, same with the Dorion Mine. They are two different localities. However Sabina does not mention fluorite from either although it does not surprise me that it is there, should be in both localities though. Don't know why fluorite was stroked out it should not be if you have a sample from there.I think the older one is the Dorion Mine. The name Dorion mine probably came first, which was renamed the Ontario Gem Mine under different ownership but when a new Ontario Gem Mine 2km away was opened they called the old one the Old Ontario Gem Mine, hence the merge between Old Ontario Gem Mine and Dorion Amethyst mine. To add to the confusion both are accessed by the same road.

Hope that helps.

Reiner,

This information should be added to the locality description.

Hi fellows:

My family and I have owned the Dorion Amethyst Mine since the mid 1990s. It was originally opened by our friends, Ted and Edna Williamson in the early 1970s. It has always (and only) been known as the "Dorion Amethyst Mine".

The "Ontario Gem Mine" and similar variants apply to a deposit owned by Peter Marino, approximately 2km southesast of us. Rob, this is unquestionably the deposit you have visited, as we have never found fluorite on our Dorion site.

Regarding the photos currently posted on the Dorion Amethyst Mine page, I can with absolute certainy state that none, with the possible exception of Bill's #208135, are from the Dorion Amethyst Mine. They need to be moved to the page for the "Ontario Gem Mine". I will be posting some Dorion specimen photos in the weeks to come.

Hope that helps. Any further questions, I'll check back over the next few days and try to help sort it out.

Regards,

-Mike

Thanks Reiner and Michael.

The mine I visited had a barn like structure with a new showroom as a gift shop where I bought a couple of small faceted stones and outside a very long old wooden sorting table.Sadly I have no pictures.

It is surprising that two amethyst deposits so close would not have the same species. Michael, you say all the photos posted at the Dorion, except 208135 go to The Old Ontario Mine? Will do. Thanks so much!

Hi Rob:

I should clarify--the specimen photos should belong to Ontario Gem; the locality photos posted by me are correct for Dorion.

Cheers,

-Mike

Got it. Thanks Michael. It will get done in the next day or two. My rock room is about to have a healing layer of drywall applied to the damage from the flood last May.

Hi Rob:

Just wanted to follow up regarding removing the specimens erroneously attributed to the Dorion Amethyst Mine (as discussed higher up in the Dorion Amethyst Mine discussion thread).

Over the last year I have posted a few true Dorion amethyst specimen photos to the page; I'll add more in the next while.

Cheers,

-Mike

P.S. Hope the drywall repairs went well!

Hi Mike,

Is the Dorion Mine open to the public or is it a private mine? I have tried searching the internet for the "Dorion Mine" but have not had much success. Google keeps returning results for other mines in the area but not the Dorion.

I am planning a trip to Thunder Bay area next week and would like to check the mine out if it is open.

Thanks,

Kelly

I believe that the Dorion is owned by the Grieve family, who also operate the Purple Haze. Big, big vugs, and big crystals, very cool stuff.

Michael Grieve passed away, far too young, this winter, the claims have reverted to his wife, and I'm unsure if the sons intend to continue mining; they're online at http://www.purplehazeamethyst.com/.

I don't believe that collecting is allowed, at least I've never heard of any pay to play there, or seen it in the literature.

Blue Points, Diamond Willow, and Bill's Old Mine are super-easy access and should keep you busy.

I did three weeks up there and wish it was three months!

Hope you have a blast!

Hi Kelly:

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question, as I have been away from the computer for several days.

Tim is correct--our family owns and operates both the Purple Haze and Dorion Amethyst Mines. Neither operation is open to collecting, but we do retail through our website and from mom's home-based shop here in Thunder Bay.

Dad (Mike Sr.) was really looking forward to our 35th mining season, but unfortunately passed away suddenly in January. Mom (Sandra), my wife (Krista) and I continue to mine both sites.

Regards,

-Mike Grieve Jr.

Good information, Michael!

If (when) I make it back to the Thunder Bay area, I will definitely contact you for a visit...
