A gold property started 1984 but ceased operation November of the same year. Owned by ASARCO. Produced 185 kg of gold (1984).
The Asarco Aquarius gold mine is situated in Macklem Township, Conc. 6, Lot 5 within the City of Timmins, Ontario. Mineralization is primarily visible gold in quartz or albite rich veins and stringers cutting carbonate rock and associated intrusives. The carbonate rock (carbonatized ultramafic rock) occurs as a fragmented sheet up to 40 m thick, set in a talc-chlorite-carbonate sequence of rocks. This sheet forms a NE trending, open-horizontal anticlinal structure, and is associated with numerous small felsic to intermediate intrusive bodies.
The deposit was discovered by Asarco Exploration in 1979 by reverse-circulation overburden drilling. The entire deposit is covered by 40 to 80 m of clay, silt and sand. A 212 m shaft was sunk in 1981 and the deposit explored by 3,200 m of drifts, cross-cuts and raises, and 31,000 m of diamond drilling. The mine was placed on care and maintenance in 1985. From 1981-1985 29,670 tonnes or ore grading 7.76 g/t had been produced. Reserves were estimated to be +15 million tonnes grading approx. 3 g/t.
