Cu-U impregnations in Permian-Triassic (Buntsandstein) conglomerates and sandstones. Abandoned mine between the village of Castell-estaó and Flamicell river.

Eureka Mine is located on one of the mineralizations of Cu-U-V that are located in the lower Triassic sandstones in the transit zone between Buntsandstein and Permian (Permotrias) in what is known as a "Red-Bed".
Is a polyphasic reservoir in which there are the following three distinct stages of mineralization.

1. Primary - stratabound, is the most important and that is really the site, has originated due to processes in a very reducing ambiance (REDOX) with levels of organic matter (carbonaceous). It is characterized by a discoloration of red sandstone and is composed of millimeter-sized grains of a complex series of elements, sulphides and sulphosalts (Cu-Fe-Zn-Bi-Co-Ni-Sb-As-Se), U-V oxides and silicates.

2. Secondary - formation of veins. Small veins are formed by filling joints by remobilization related with tectonic processes (Alpine deformation). Its composition is mainly quartz-ankerite and sulphides of Cu.

3. Tertiary-supergene. This phase of alteration forms a wide range of secondary minerals being particularly large and varied in the case of uranium. Finally and in this phase there are a number of supergene minerals deposited on the walls of the interior of the galleries and the special process that led to them, which have to be considered separately.

Historically noteworthy is that the Eureka Mine was the first uranium mining work in Spain considering that it was really just a research project.
The small site of the Eureka Mine is a fantastic example of interaction of Cu-U-V ores where you can study the supergene evolution of this type of deposit.

New investigations have shown that also alpinotypic minerals are abundant within the primary uranium mineralisation.
The Eureka mine is the second locality worldwide for lecoqite-(Y) (PXRD- and SEM-EDS-confirmed).

May be reopened by local authorities as a tourist mine.
