Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Lone Hand Mine
One of the few primary tin prospects worked in the Beechworth area. Two parallel lodes strike 214-218 degrees, and were traced for two miles to the north. The eastern lode apparently comprised of clay derived from decomposed feldspar, studded with cassiterite crystals, to which the miners gave the name the Cement Lode.
J.P.L. Kenny described the surface workings in 1927, and returned in 1937 to report on the underground prospecting work that had recently taken place. Since then (but pre-1980s), later additional surface work (including a small open cut) has obscured these earlier workings.
Freeport held an exploration lease over the area in the early 1980s, and appear to refer to the Hidden Friend as the "Lone Hand".
