Mining started on 2 leases around 1907 when three young prospectors decided to open the mine. It was named Mug's Blow by them in reference to their inexperience at mining. They dollied 4000 pounds (value at the time)gold, which is a very good return.
In 1922 the mine was active again, worked by H. Manuel for a small private Perth Syndicate. The ore was crushed at the Warriedar state battery. This syndicate acquired the lease in 1919, calling it Golden Monarch. Their intention was to sink the shaft below the water level, and at 66 feet down struck a big grey-white quartz reef with visible gold. The footwall was dolerite also containing gold, and at the time this was written the hanging wall had not been located. There were also four shafts on the lease. The North Shaft contained blue quartz leaders with visible gold. The southern most shaft was described as containing blue puggy clay, where panning showed gold freely. The journalist was shown specimens 10-12 lb in weight showing visible coarse and fine gold. Modern mining may have obliterated these historic workings.
The lease contained four distinct reefs. The four shafts were (1) to 30 feet deep on a reef 2 feet 6 inches wide (2) to 58 feet deep on two leaders carrying coarse gold (3) main shaft to 70 feet deep on a reef 4 to 6 feet wide and (4) to 58 feet deep lode material 4 feet wide.
Monarch and Mug's Luck were later names. Gindalbie took over the leases in 1999 and shortly after a modern open pit was developed at the site, with mining between 2001 to 2006. Subsequently the lease was owned by Monarch Mining Pty Ltd, Golden Stallion Resources and from 2010 the Shandong Tianye Group.
Monarch Mining in 2006 estimated the location contains 159 300 tonnes at a grade of 2.3 for 12 100 ounces.
