A Southern suburb of Ballarat, Sebastopol sits on thick basalt overlaying slates and sandstones hosting significant gold bearing quartz reefs.

Mining started in Sebastopol when the deep alluvial leads where traced down from Ballarat in the late 1850's and 1860's, many of the deep lead mines intersected rich quartz reefs and made the transition to hardrock mining. The Star of the East was one of the deepest reef mines going down over 3000 feet, some of the deep leads here are approaching 400 feet to bottom.

Sebastopol was a separate town to Ballarat in the goldfields era, it is named after the fall of Sevastopol in the Crimean war.

A new housing subdivision was underway late 2013, and large boulders of basalt were excavated during drain-making activities. Some of this basalt is mineralised. The subdivision is bounded by Grant Street, Walker Street, Vickers Street and Kossuth Street. This block is also the site of a deep lead mine, and a mine dump still existed in October 2013. Inside the construction area, there is signs of deep lead activity (quartz cobbles strewn about).
