(Map- 'Peak Hill' wording on Google Maps/Google Earth is not where the former town site of Peak Hill was, but rather locates it near the Fortnum Gold Mine. The Main Gold Mine is near the former town site).
Peak Hill is the name of a goldfield locality and site of a ghost town, although little of it remains today. Gold was discovered at Peak Hill by William John Wilson in 1892. The gold mine produced 270 000 ounces of gold until 1913. The Peak Hill general store closed in 1954, effectively making the site a ghost town. Mining for gold resumed in the 1980's, before the area became dormant again in the early 2000's. There are four open pits: Main, Jubilee, Fiveways and Harmony, within a few square kilometres of each other. Horseshoe is nearby to the north.
