Open-pit gold mine.
Operated by Barrick Ltd.
The Granny Smith gold deposit was discovered by Ray Smith in 1979. An open pit was developed and processing plant erected. Once the Granny Smith Mine was abandoned, other nearby ore-bodies were developed to feed the processing plant. Wallaby is 23 kilometres south of Laverton, 11 kilometres west of Granny Smith, on the eastern edge of the Lake Carey saltpan. Just-in-Case is the southern extension of the mine. These started as an open-pit but this ceased in 2006, and has continued as an underground operation.
The mine lies in the Laverton Tectonic Zone, of major north-south shears and associated faults. Gold is associated with structurally controlled dilatant sites on a major north north-west trending, easterly dipping, brittle-ductile shear zone.
At Wallaby/Just-in-Case there are three lodes, which are sub-horizontal to flat, south-east dipping, and sub-parrallel. The ore body has a 400 metres strike length, and at least a 600 metres down dip. The main lode is surrounded by numerous less continuous sub-parrallel and cross link zones. There are two granitic intrusions in the mineralised zone. Gold is also found here where they are cut by the lodes, although it is disseminated and a lower grade. The ore zone is hosted by a 1200 metre series of Archaean matrix supported polymict conglomerates. This is covered by 15 to 70 metres of lake sediments.
