Locality: 5 km west of Northampton. The mine is at the south end of a fracture where it is cut by a pegmatite.
Country rock is quartz-feldspar-biotite-garnet gneiss, containing pegmatite, quartz lenses and veins, and clusters of porphryroblastic garnet.
In this area is a number of parallel en enchelon shears, with richer zones where the shears intersect pegmatites. Individual ore shoots plunge south with ore zones up to 1.2 metres wide. Galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and pyrite are in vyggy quartz veins in the primary zone, while malachite, azurite, cerussite, covellite, chalcocite and native copper is in the oxidised and supergene zones.
The Wheal Fortune mine operated between 1862-1868, over a length of 223 metres, and down to 90 metres. It produced 3015 tonnes of lead ore at 75% Pb and 2681 tonnes of copper ore at 17% Cu. The Wheal Fortune Extended mine is connected to Wheal Fortune at the 55 metre level of the shaft.
The Paringa mine is nearby to the north and has been listed on Mindat as a separate locality.
