Ancient lead-zinc mining district, commercially worked until 1954. The deposit consists of quartz veins with Pb-Zn-Ag mineralization, which are hosted by gneisses and amphibolites. A tourist mine allows access to various adits and levels.

This entry includes all localities related to the lead and zinc mining activities, and encompasses an area around Schauinsland mountain which straddles the municipalities of Freiburg, Horben, Münstertal and Oberried.

A visitors' mine offers guided underground tours.

Pyromorphite specimens, for which the area is noted among collectors, are often vaguely labelled as coming from Schauinsland mountain, or, hardly more specific, from one of the adjacent valleys such as Großtal or Münstertal (which is the name of both a town and a valley).
