Just because I see an elephant and call it a MacroMouse(tm) for marketing purposes does not make it a mouse. The seller in question clearly either (1) has no idea what rhodochrosite is, (2) has dyed the rhodochrosite, or (3) does know what rhodochrosite is but hopes to make a quick buck off someone who doesn't know what rhodochrosite is.

Hi all;


Looks like dyed cave onyx, to me. Did anyone notice that sales of this items can be to anywhere but China & Italy? Could it be that the sales laws are MUCH tougher, in those countries, which is why they can't sell this to them? I vote that they are deliberately scamming; no "accidental mis-ID" for these folks.

Steven and Maggie, no no, we also welcome the scams to us here in Italy ... Seriously, there are no laws so hard to prohibit to buy one thing rather than another. Perhaps I think the distrust of this dealer one in our postal service, due to previous bad experiences (probably lost in shipping goods to China and Italy). Sure, it has not the right idea of what is a rodochrosite!!! It looks to me more like a banded blue (cuprian) aragonite, from China or Africa. Regards.

could it be that the design, beauteous as it might be, was ripped off some Italian company, and they simply do not want to risk repercussions?

China is funny, because they are in China, Hong Kong being part of it last time I checked! :)

P.S.: I have not had any problems with Italian postal services in 20 years of trading specimens with Italian collectors.

Mmmh, the design is not so exclusive...To me is a "postal" question, perhaps about the customs rules. No problem within the Europe, yes, but from USA can be problematic. An american dealer, or from other countries in the world, can see return back a package sent via insured mail, if not declarated and described as required by the italian customs. However, I am also an ebayer, I'm going to send these questions:

Interesting article, but Rhodochrosite should not be pink or red? Why is it blue? You can send in Italy?

What do you think Branko?

The second one definitely looks like blue lace agate from Africa. The first might be but is hard to tell, maybe dyed something.

"Man-made" is for the oval or the material? Yes, looks like coloured Chalcedony. The name Blue Rhodochrosite is perhaps only for the analogy with the banded Rhodo from Argentina. Simone

OK, sorry, but I'm confused -- the linked article says, "Interestingly enough, there is another argentinian locality in the Nesquen province, where large blue celestite stalagtites are found, which closely resemble the Capillitas rhodochrosite stalagtites, but are of fine blue colour !"


Was the point that there's a potential for confusion?

Thanks Don, now it is clear and my understandment for the mineralogy is on the right way again. In German we have another word for celestine which of course is often light blue.

I wasn't actually questioning you so much as trying to figure out the relevance of the previous post, but it's interesting to hear that there's yet a different name for celestine in German.


I've always been a fan of the mineral and can't quite get used to calling it celestine instead of celestite. I'm sure there's a good reason, but it just never made sense to me.


Desmine? No, stilbite.


Calamine? No, smithsonite / hemimorphite / hydrozincite. (OK, maybe that's a good enough explanation on its own.)


Celestine vs. celestite? Let's pick the one that doesn't fit with the "ends in -ite" standard and is also used as an adjective.


Hardly something that keeps me awake at night, but I do wonder / occasionally harrumph.

Shipping to Italy has been Notoriously Horrible for at least the past 5 or 6 years. Ask any person that deals with the Italian Post Office and anyone living in Italy and they will tell you. Simone Citon mentioned this the very first post they made and people kind of blew off the thought of it being the post office there, but it is true and Simone knows. Many rock collectors and dealers, and turquoise and semi-precious dealers and meteorite dealers and jewelry dealers on ebay or Etsy or of online stores Won't ship to Italy, won't ship to Mexico and won't ship to Thailand or China because things often get lost as in stolen and are never heard from again. Italy is more notorious for the slow post office and the bad way in which items take nearly 4 weeks to get delivered from anyone in the United States. People will ship to Greece, Spain, France, Portugal or Germany or other countries in Europe and even to Turkey and Israel and not worry about it, but Italy has this lazy system of the package goes to this post office and the person pays someone to ship it to another post office and then that person pays for items to go to the next post office so that unless all their dues or payments or handouts are meant the package will just sit in a PO until someone decides to pay the fees to move it onto the next and then finally to get to the person. Many sellers from Thailan also say on their ebay listings, "We don't ship to Thailand or China since buyers often run scams and keep the items and say they were never received and want an insurance claim filed. The pattern of lines and waves in the bands is about as near to any pink Rhodochrosite that I have ever seen. I'm almost 99% sure it's a dyed stone with blue color, unless it was something that was not well covered by the mineral community, since the original question was almost 3 years ago, back in 2010. Often new minerals and rocks come about that we don't hear about unitl it has been bought up by someone and appears at the Denver Mineral show or the Tucson Rock and Mineral show. Think about "Courtland Plume" that was found in the 1990s near the mountains around Bakersfield, California. It has so many beautiful colors from so many different minerals that it was studied and then the name was chosen for it. Most of the most beautiful stones, slabs and cabs are gone now and it's hard to find realy beautiful blues and greens.

The shipping issue Hong Kong does not ship internally part of the take over rules and shipping to Italy is a royal pain with customs so some just don't want the headache

I agree with Simone that reluctance to send mailorder goods to Italy is due to its postal service. Many internet dealers (outside Europe anyway) have lists of countries they will not send packages to, and Italy, Russia and Argentina are often at the top of the list! It's a pity :-(
