The "New Mineral" Osumilite-Mg is first described in Min.Mag.(1973) 39, 189-192

and has the IMA-Nr. 1975-002a.

XRD is given in Contr.Min.Petrol.(1967) 14, 343-358 for synthetic materal.

Why is IMA2011-083 a new mineral

Alexander Hölzel

29th Jan 2012 13:08 UTCBela Feher Expert

Probably osumilite-(Mg) has not been formally described yet.

29th Jan 2012 13:49 UTCAnatoly Kasatkin

Alexander,

Chinner and Dixon described in the 1973 paper you are referring to "osumilite-(K,Mg)" from Ireland. They did not get it formally

approved by IMA (Mindat assigns IMA 1975-002 number to keyite).

In 1980 IMA rejected the name "osumilite-(K,Mg)":

http://rruff.info/rruff_1.0/uploads/MM43_1053.pdf

Thus, current IMA list of minerals mentions "osumulite-(K,Mg)" as being discredited and "osumilite-(Mg)" described in 2008 by Seryotkin et al. (EJM 20, 191-198) as published without approval by CNMNC:

http://pubsites.uws.edu.au/ima-cnmnc/IMA2009-01%20UPDATE%20160309.pdf

So Mg-dominant analogue of osumilite, being described repeatedly in past, was never formally approved by IMA.

29th Jan 2012 20:49 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

Anatoly is correct. We should thank Nikita Chukanov for finally putting an official stamp on Osumilite-(Mg).

30th Jan 2012 14:55 UTCLefteris Rantos Expert

I believe Hilarionite (IMA No. 2011-089) is the material formerly known as "Kankite" from the Hilarion Mine. See http://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=1936&min=2153

Lefteris

30th Jan 2012 16:26 UTCMarco E. Ciriotti Manager

Yes. Correct, Lefteris.

30th Jan 2012 16:49 UTCUwe Kolitsch Manager

The X-ray powder patterns and the unit cells show some distinct similarities.

30th Jan 2012 17:11 UTCLefteris Rantos Expert

So the Kankite photos from the locality should be moved under Hilarionite (with a note in the caption), and Kankite should be marked as questionable in the locality page.

Does anyone have any proof that Kankite occurs indeed in Hliarion, or anywhere else in the Lavrion Distr.??

30th Jan 2012 21:19 UTCEtienne Medard Expert

What surprises me about Osumilite-Mg is that Miyashiro's type material for Osumilite (American Mineralogist 41: 104-116, 1956) was the Mg-dominant end-member. How come the Fe-dominant end-member is now osumilite, and there is a need for describing a new Mg end-member ?

I received the following message from Nikita who autorize me to post it here.

""Dear Marco,

I would like to elucidate the situation in reference to the comment of Etienne Medard on your site: "What surprises me about Osumilite-Mg is that Miyashiro's type material for Osumilite (American Mineralogist 41: 104-116, 1956) was the Mg-dominant end-member. How come the Fe-dominant end-member is now osumilite, and there is a need for describing a new Mg end-member ?"

Really, it is not an end-member, but an intermediate member of the series osumilite – osumilite-(Mg). Fe-dominant osumilite from Sakkabira, Japan, has Fe2+:Mg=1.33:0.65. Our data (supplementary) confirm that the mineral from Sakkabira is Fe-dominant and its approximate formula is (K0.7Na0.3)(Fe1.1Mg0.8Mn0.1)(Al2.5Fe0.5)(Al1.7Si10.3)O30.

There was a need to describe osumilite-(Mg) because there was no complete descriptions of this mineral on the same type material.

Mg-dominant (at the octahedral site) analogues of osumilite have been described repeatedly (Armbruster and Oberhänsli, 1988; Balassone et al., 2008; Seryotkin et al., 2008). However this mineral has the status N (“published without approval by the CNMNC”). In the IMA list of minerals, for osumilite-(Mg) the reference Seryotkin et al. (2008) for the description of a technogenetic sample is given. Moreover, the formula of osumilite-(Mg) in the IMA list of minerals, KMg2O30,does not correspond to the formula KC0.83NaB’0.10(Mg1.78Fe0.16Mn0.03Ti0.03)A(Al2.88Fe0.12)T2(Al1.91Si10.09)T1O30 presented in the cited paper. “Osumilite-(K,Mg)” has been discredited by the IMA CNMNC. Our work was aimed at a complete investigation of a type specimen to be approved by the IMA CNMNC as a valid species, with a definite name.

You can place this my comment on your site, if you want.

Best wishes

Nikita Chukanov.""
