Identity HelpWavellite - Texas or Arkansas? Opinions please...

Hi All,

I obtained a wavellite specimen that is labelled Zimpleman Pass prospects, Quitman Mts, Hudspeth Co., Texas, USA.

There are no pictures in the data base to compare, so I can't determine if there has been a label mix up.

The material looks very much like Arkansas material, however I would like to know if anyone has collected wavellite there and could determine if this looks like it could come from Texas. Since this is on the far side of Texas from Arkansas, I don't know if the material there could be similar to that found in Arkansas.

Any info appreciated.

thanks,

stephanie :-)

sample length approx 9 cm

Stephanie - I haven't seen wavellite from Texas, this sure looks like Arkansas material to me.

Another vote for Arkansas, probably Mauldin Mountain Quarries, Mauldin Mt., Montgomery Co., Arkansas, USA

Zimpleman Pass is a skarn. Matrix doesn't look like that.

It is not from Mauldin Mtn. It is from Avant, Garland Co, AR.

1 more vote for Avant, Garland Co.

It is 99.99% certain to be one of the Arkansas locales. As a Texas and Arkansas collector I have never seen anything close to it from Texas.

Thanks All. That was my suspicion. David, yes, I had read about the skarn, my first thought was that the matrix wasn't right. Darn the skarn! :-X

I really wanted it to be a Texan wavellite :-(

As there are no pictures at all for Zimpleman Pass, I couldn't even speculate about the matrix, but my guess was that the appearance of the specimen was far too much of a coincidence to look so much like Arkansas material. Oh well, guess I have another Arkansas wavellite.

Thanks Hal for confirming.

I guess I'll go fix the label. Again. *sigh*

stephanie :-)

Hi Stephanie, this may help. Its a specimen that came as part of a recently aquired collection, its uncleaned and at the moment glued to its styrafoam base, printed on to the box is the location and it looks almost identical to yours.

Sure looks like an Arkansas specimen to me as well.

As Hal mentioned, I have never seen anything like that from Texas.

Peter - thanks for the photo. I would agree that Avant, Garland is the most probable Arkansas location.

stephanie :-)

After checking several of my Mauldin specimens I would also concur with the Avant locale as a best guess.

More specifically, Dug Hill, Avant....in my opinion.

Et tu, Brute?

In other words - this one too?

I should have specified that I hold 160 acres of BLM claims in Avant and Mauldin Mtn so when i stated my opinion it was more of a factual statement.
