I recently inherited a collection of crystalsand geodes and do not have the faintest idea what anything else. The crystal in question is a dark brown polished crystal that is somewhat see through. Any ideas? The bottom has a sticker that says KLPP 60S

Charles,

My first guess, smoky quartz. Get a mineral book with lots of pictures and start thumbing through it. If you know some common mineral names, try the mindat galleries. In fact, a good start with the most common minerals is to, on the homepage, click 'search minerals by properties', then click the box' IMA accepted only', that'll show pictures of all the most common stuff, and click each mineral for more info. That'll really get you going.

this is a smoky quartz crystal quite well terminated and seems to be very clear gem quality (suitable for faceting ) the letters and numbers on the piece are collection numbers from the previous owners

regards wolf

in regards to mike reinke his tip on finding out more about the crystal is excellent i also recommend this

That is a very fine specimen. I am not sure it could be from Switzerland but think a pegmatite possibly from Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Awesome specimen of smokey quartz, Charles!!! (tu)

I would tend to lean more towards Switzerland because of the colour and quality.
