PhotosLepidolite - Torrington, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, USA

21st May 2012 17:48 UTCHarold Moritz 🌟 Expert

Looks like rose quartz or amethyst, NOT mica. It has a contact impression of mica on one face, but otherwise the luster and fracture, etc. is quartz. If this were lepidolite there would be pegmatites with other lithium minerals, and they do not occur in this part of the state, and apparently no such minerals associated with this piece have been posted.

It also looks like it could be morganite, but that would likewise be very unusual for Torrington. Suggest a hardness test for starters.

Thank you for the info! have been out of the loop for awhile. This piece showed up while screening, cleaning, out some actinolite/quartz mud. havent found anything like it since, this area, however, has amazed me with its variety of minerals. I am hoping to bring a box to the june 8 show in New Milford? have alot of what I think is pink Zoisite, pyrite, galena, tremolite, actinolite, and many different types of quartz crystals. The area seems to have alot of contact points where different type veins cross.

John:

I have heard about the variety of minerals there from some other folks, and the list above sounds very plausible and interesting, especially the pink zoisite, which is very rare in Conn. I will be at the sale at the Kent mining and mineral museum on June 9 (I think that is what you are referring to?) and will gladly help you identify your finds. I'm sure Jack Palowski, who runs the place, can help as well and would be excited to see the material.

I was at this locality. I found quartz castings, actinolite, and the pink zoisite, thulite or violet scapolite? Dont know yet.

The irony is I was at this very quarry 4 years ago and I didnt find a thing back then. I was to much of a novice.

Im looking forward to having the pink rock properly identified

Ill see some of you in Kent...
