PhotosTourmaline - Simpson Quarry, South Glastonbury, Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, USA

I always thought that it was strange that there was no green tourmaline at Simpson, until I saw this, but are you sure it isn't from Hollister?

Rowan, if you can be sure of one thing, it is Mike knows where he collected this. Lol and if there is something interesting to be found, Mike will find it.

Hi Rowan, Absolutely sure this is where I collected this piece. I've never been to Hollister or have any pieces from there. The green Tourmaline in question is on a piece I culled from my bucket upon returning from Simpson and banished to the back yard not remembering why I kept it. I walked by it recently and again noticed the green mineral and realised why I picked it up in the first place. Not a very impressive or asthetically pleasing to the eye specimen.Asked for an ID here and was happy to have Fritz ID it for me since he is so knowledgeable and familiar with Simpson. And David, I have been fortunate enough to have found some interesting things in the field but I don't always know what I'm looking at. Thanks my friends for helping educate me

Tourmaline like that is rare at simpson, so It is actually a pretty cool piece.

There is plenty of nice green elbaite to be found at Simpson Quarry with diligence. This is a very typical piece. A few years ago, I collected quite a few apple green prismatic crystals from a boulder of cleavelandite, lepidolite, and quartz. Some of the better crystals are even kind of gemmy and transparent. Mike, did you visit the locality recently? I have heard there has been trouble with accessibility. I want to go back there to try to find unusual minerals to submit for XRD and Raman IR analysis. I think there could be new species for our state lurking in those dumps.

Jeremy, I believe it was the summer of 2010 when I collected there last. No problem with access at that time as I met many people there as well as the Boston Mineral Club. There was a new road put in near the path in but no postings or anything like that. How long ago did you here of a problem with access?
